Regarding wolf pups and milk.?

I have two questions; if there's a certain answer for one, then I don't need the second one answered but it'd still be nice to know.

Say, a wolf was pregnant, gave birth and then died. Would another wolf who might not be that close to the one that was pregnant and nowhere near the pups, if shown the pups, be able to sustain them with her milk? I know that wolves close to the mother may be able to do so, but will the same hold true for a completely different animal assuming she accepts the pups and does not kill them anyway?

And, what age approximately can wolf pups stop drinking milk? I had thought it was six-to-eight weeks, but if necessary, could it be any earlier?
The surrogate mother I would be speaking of would not be pregnant at that time, sorry.
Also! By meat I mean crushed meat, that's been thrown up, not just whole, regular, fresh meat.

That depends on if you're talking about another female within the pack, or one from another pack. All females in a wolf pack come into season, and though only the alpha female usually mates and becomes pregnant, the other females experience a 'phantom pregnancy', and produce milk - they can therefore help the mother to suckle the cubs. If the mother dies, the other females would take care of and raise the young.

However, if you gave the cubs to an unrelated wolf from another pack, it's debatable what would happen. There are cases of wolves adopting and raising cubs from other packs, but it's more likely they would be seen as competition for the pack's own young - they would therefore be killed.

All the wolves in a pack, male and female, will regurgitate partly-digested food for the cubs, and it would be possible for them to survive on this alone after a certain point if they no longer had access to milk. In the first few weeks, though, milk is essential.
